As of this writing, there are a total of 2,311 COVID-19 cases in the Philippines. It was only last March 14 on a live stream when the President raised COVID-19 Code Red Alert Sub-Level 2 and discussed measures against the coronavirus threat. Since we cannot always trace the whereabouts of every single people we encounter each day, we may not know who has been exposed to the virus. And studies say that the country has not reached its peak yet! And that exact thought is scary. Several countries all over the world affected by this virus actually have better healthcare systems and advanced medical facilities than what we have in the country. Yet, they have thousands of cases that are rising every single day.

Classes are suspended until April 12, 2020. Land, domestic air and domestic sea travel to and from Metro Manila shall be suspended beginning March 15 to April 14, 2020. Travellers coming in from countries with localized transmission will be banned except for Filipino citizens and residents. Only 1 person from each household will be allowed to go out to buy necessities from the market or grocery store. Private corporations are either forced to close their offices or let their employees work remotely in compliance with the quarantine. Malls and restaurants are closed. Even courier operations halted. The usually busy streets of Makati, Ortigas, BGC and other business districts within Metro Manila seem like ghost towns nowadays. COVID-19 has really affected everyone’s daily lives.

Social distancing is said to be an effective measure once properly observed to at least help slow down the spread of the virus. This is what the government is trying to aim, thus, the lockdown. So it is best to just follow the authorities, stay at home, observe proper hand washing, and disinfect. Until then, we need to stay where we are and wait until the virus is contained. Ironically, socialization is what the stereotypical say as a disadvantage of homeschooling your kid.

So what happens now that classes are suspended? How will its purpose be served?

Since the implementation, everything is suddenly new. A lot of restrictions, a lot of rules to abide by, a new norm to get used to. It will take time for most to adjust to it for sure. As they say, this is only temporary. But why wait until everything is back to normal? Your child’s learning doesn’t have to rely on the four corners of the classroom.

This also goes the same way with homeschooling. It doesn’t have to be confined inside of your home. But homeschooling has its flexibility that you can treat each family trip or errands outside as “field trips”. But since we are on quarantine, how about let your kids do household chores and treat it as lessons on home economics? Homeschooling at its finest, right? That is just how flexible it is! If employers can allow their employees to work remotely while our community is on quarantine, then learning needs not to be interrupted just because classes are suspended.

Isolation - although odd for most people - has been our norm for almost three years now. And within those years, there have been several instances where we find homeschooling very convenient. It is not just for the depressed, the bullied, nor it is for children with medical condition alone. We actually plan to homeschool our child even beyond duration of her medication. Homeschooling is a very practical option whatever situation a family is in. As for us, it is the best path we can take to ensure that she always eat the right food and on time to keep her at optimum health.

In this time of corona, children can still learn even within the confines of your own home. And yes. It is you who will facilitate your child’s learning, customize your teaching according to your child’s learning style. You have the control over the subject areas you want your child to focus on. And most importantly, you know that your child is safe inside your home! No need to be overwhlemed. No need to panic. You only need to find a homeschool provider to be your partner in this new journey you’re about to take.
